I attended the NAMI P2P Mentor training.  Doug and Joe were our trainers and they were great.  They are consumers, or whatever we call ourselves these days, too.  It follows scripted material where you learn about relapse prevention and do a relapse prevention grid, the brain biology and research, story telling, education on mental illness, advance directives, mindfulness, and other topics.  All of it was good except I took offense to the scientific research which stated the schizophrenic brain was smaller than a normal brain and had mutant brain cells.  I let them know in the evaluation that my teensy brain was offended.  Other than that it was very worthwhile and educational and interesting.  I'm glad I attended.

Thanks for being honest about your experience.
